128th Street between Fifth and Madison Avenues

Right before casting my vote at P.S. 911 in East Harlem Tuesday, I looked across the street and noticed this quaint green home that reminded me of Indiana.

It's not that common to see architecture like this in Manhattan. The porch, the siding and the shutters off the windows are just lovely.

There was a bustle of activity two doors down from this building and that's when I saw a very different facade being constructed on this block.

I inquired with the workers standing outside of the building, and they informed me that this would be a single-family home.

Harlem has some very interesting architecture, great post
Similar wooden porches on 130th between Lenox and 5th, adjacent to The Lenox condo building
We live right next door to those houses. They really do make the street distinctive though I wonder how well that one being built will fit in when it's finally done. I actually have a photo book of Harlem homes that has a pic of the green house when it was once much more colorful.
the green house used to be multi colored. brown/orange etc. they rehabbed it and painted it as such a couple years ago. always liked it.
You are not in Harlem. You are in East Harlem. East of Fifth Avenue from 96th Street to the East River and ending at 142nd Street is East Harlem. Langston Hughes lived one block away.

The construction of wooden houses south of 155th street was banned in 1888. Which means the quaint green house is probably very old.
Christopher Bell,
The issue you raise was brought up in a post earlier this year... Some say the neighborhood is Central Harlem, others East Harlem. Post is here:
Vague Territory
What a cool facade, finally some people with taste and vision.
Any one knows how to go about identifying the architects of Harlem townhouses?
