Bagel Politics

Here's an issue that should be debated before next week's midterm election: Men over 30 with MySpace accounts.

Indiana Senator Evan Bayh is one of those men. Thus far, it looks like the U.S. Senator's got 1,411 friends.

There's an obvious lack of scantily-clad girls thanking him for the add, but Bayh's music selection makes it worth the click.

94 friends? Ummm... actually he has 1400...

And I think I read somewhere that they percentage of people on myspace that are over 30 is actually about 50%...

Can't get anything past a Hoosier! Thanks for noting. I made the change on the post.

As for the MySpace age issue: It's not about percentages, it's about the ick-factor. Do our elected officials really need to follow Dave Navarro's lead? Men over 30, particularly those unwilling to take their shirt off for the camera, should look for friends at work or in bars or on the campaign trail... Not on MySpace. It's just icky.

It's ok for Evan Bayh to have a myspace account because he's not using it to pick up chicks (as far as we know, eh Rob?) But as a general rule, men over 30 should find other avenues for dating or meeting friends. It's for kids, leave 'em alone, for chrissake. Not to mention there are pictures of 15 year old girls dancing around in their underwear. It's ok for their friends to see, but not OK for you disgusting perverted men over 30. Get on e-harmony.

MySpace was originally created as a promotional tool for bands to advertise and disseminate their music. It then spread to comedians and other artists. Unfortunately, it has become a vehicle for stalkers and pedophiles. If Bayh or other politicians are using MySpace as a means to connect with their constituents in an honest way, I don't see anything wrong with it. Actually, I would encourage it. If, however, they're using MySpace to pick up girls (or little boys), then they'll get caught; they always get caught.
